How To Teach Kids Financial Literacy In An Ever Changing World

How to Teach Kids Financial Literacy in an Ever-Changing World

This is one of several upcoming articles focused on financial-literacy tips and activities for parents inspired by the new Entrepreneur Kids book series. The first title in the series, Entrepreneur Kids: All About Money, is available for purchase now via Amazon | Barnes & Noble | IndieBound | Bookshop | Entrepreneur Press.

When my wife and I were raising our children, it was an easier time. We could have the kids go out and sell lemonade on the corner. They delighted in hearing the jingle of the coins in their pockets and then spending the cash on candy (or whatever) at the store. Times have changed. It’s important not to fumble the financial teaching of our kids today.

Parents: You have to do this financial-readiness teaching for your ; no one else will. Fortunately, there is some time-tested guidance and tools to help you adapt to our changing world.

Oh, how the financial times have changed

There is so much debt nowadays. Your child is not going to make it financially unless you teach them. You want them to know how to be an entrepreneur? Teach and time management first, and give them ample opportunities to practice with money.

Many and older Gen Z adults are back living with their parents because the cost of living on their own isn’t as attainable as it once was. It’s vital for parents to help prepare their kids for living in an increasingly complex world.

Start young with financial teaching

It’s hard in the best of times, but when parents don’t have a lot of money, it can be that much harder to teach a child fiscal responsibility. We are busy, and when you add in pandemic-related stresses, teaching a young child about money may not seem that essential, but the lessons learned from our current macro-economic circumstances are all the more reason to make instilling them in our kids a priority.

Even a child between three and five can learn that money has to be earned. They can learn about spending, saving and giving. When you take them to the store, even sharing some financial information such as, “Mommy and daddy are so lucky to have good jobs so that we can buy this food” is meaningful.

Simple conversations go a long way toward informing kids that it takes money to do things. Begin at about age three, and continue until their late teens. If you start young, they’ll better understand the connection between finding a job and having money for needs and fun by the time they’re in high school.

If you head to the movies or some other recreational outing, reiterate the same concepts: “Aren’t we so lucky that we have good jobs so that we can afford to go ?” “We are so happy that we can work hard so our family has money to go to movies.” These conversations begin to have a cumulative effect.

Support is out there

Some parents might be relieved that their children didn’t grow up grappling with the hard realities of money, but as I watch so many millennials struggling financially, I’m grateful I opened my mouth with my kids. Did it feel weird and uncomfortable? Certainlty, but we don’t have the luxury of silence anymore.

Luckily, there are many more resources now than there used to be. Check out the National Financial Educators Council for some great age-appropriate advice. And there are many books written for very young kids to start learning about money matters. One of the best I’ve seen is the Kyng & Kyren Generational Wealth Building Activity Book. Grab one that works for you and your family, and get started.

The cause-and-effect stage

When a kid is about seven-to-10 years old, they’re ready to begin earnestly understanding the operations of money. Think of it as their, “If I don’t do my chores, I won’t get an allowance” stage. In the past, we meted out cash as a reward. In an increasingly cashless society, that may prove more challening.

There are credit cards available with kids in mind that parents can stricly monitor, which might be the most practical route. It’s also an effective way to teach them purchasing power, particularly when they realize there’s not enough money left on the card to cover what’s in their cart.

Years ago, one of my kids decided to buy a pair of Air Jordans. They were three times the price of regular sneakers, but the child had earned the money, and it was his to spend as he wished. Later, he said, “These shoes wore out just as fast as my other shoes.”

I asked, “What did you learn?” At first, he said, “I learned that I can have more shoes if I don’t have Air Jordans.” Later, he revised his opinion, saying, “I’m buying another pair of Air Jordans because I have the money,” adding that he wanted to make more so that he could buy Air Jordans for everyone. Now that’s an entrepreneur.

With this guidance as a bedrock in their earliest years, your kids will hopefully mature into money-wise teenagers and, eventually, young adults. Parents, it is your great privilege to help your children succeed and move forward financially and in business. Take the challenge, and hopefully you can all bank on the results.

The Keys to Successful Online Course Creation

If you are employed as an instructional designer, then you know how challenging the job can be. Sure, it’s easy to just throw a course together and call it online learning, elearning, or digital learning, but it takes time, effort, and skill to create a quality course. So, we wanted to write a short blog that helps instructional designers do their jobs better, by listing the keys to successful online course creation.

1. Develop a clean class outline

Letting people learn at their pace is essential, but not guiding their path will almost always guarantee their failure. Remember, small wins lead to big wins. Big wins lead to success. Creating your classes with this in mind is the path to success. That’s why your class should be straightforward in nature, and learners should readily understand how to go about achieving the promised outcomes. It helps them know exactly what is the next step to take and what they have to gain from it.

Every module and lesson should have one objective or goal. When learners know what they’re working for and how they’ll benefit from it, they are much more likely to be motivated to follow along with the class, and they will learn faster. If a module has three to five or more goals, learners can’t wrap their minds around what they’re trying to accomplish, and it’s easy for them to get overwhelmed and drop out. Contemplate splitting a lesson into two or more shorter lessons to make the path easier to follow.

2. Create an exciting learning experience

A key aspect of making a successful online class is making it rewarding and frictionless. When learners feel empowered as opposed to confused and purposeless, completion rates increase! Better organization and reduced learner friction™ are what will keep customers more content.

Here are two effective techniques to create a rewarding and frictionless experience:

  1. Content chunking
Content chunking is the technique of breaking content into smaller chunks that are easier to manage and learn. Small challenges or chunks are easier to handle and help learners comprehend the material faster and retain it all while exerting less effort.
  2. Digital badges
If you want to inspire learners to finish your class, participate, and interact more with the teacher and the other learners, offering a tangible reward is an excellent method. Why? People love rewards. They want to feel unique, recognized, and essential. And if you can help them accomplish this, their self-confidence will increase, and they will be more willing to continue in your online class. How can you create tangible rewards for your learners? Start by using digital badges to reward your learners:
  3. Provide a digital badge for class completion. People love sharing their achievements with the world and adding them to their CV.
  4. Offer bonus points for accomplishments. When they reach milestones, they get points. They can then turn in their points for Amazon cash, gift cards, etc.
  5. Design a virtual training “passport” and inspire participants to earn visas. The more modules they complete, the more visas (or badges) they receive.

3. Develop actionable class content

Although you may know a lot, resist the urge to pack your class with “nice-to-know” information. Learners want “must-know” information that they can apply to their daily lives. They want to know how to get ahead in their careers. They want marketable skills they can add to their resume.

Don’t ignore theory, but you need to find a way to connect it to the learners’ lives and make it actionable. You can do this by showing how theory can be applied to real situations, exposing case studies, finding applications in real-life issues, adding exercises, missions, and assignments to your class.

If learners can’t see how your content is relevant and don’t have a vision of what they can do with it, they will not learn it. Even if they do learn it so they can pass the assessment, they’ll likely forget about it in a short time. If they learn how to do something, they’re likely to complete the class, achieve their goals, apply the knowledge, and retain the information for a long time.

Actionable content not only tells your learners what to achieve but how to achieve it. It’s engaging, informative, and, most importantly, action-driven. Your learners bought a class instead of an eBook because they were looking for something more likely to help them achieve their desired outcomes. As a class creator, it’s your job to help them do that. You play a major role in helping your learners take action!

4. Separate your class into chunks

Many class creators feel like a longer class packed with lots of content is more valuable, but that’s far from the truth. Having too much content makes you lose customers and blurs the learning path. Remember, you want learners to come back for more, so keeping the lessons short and focused on a specific topic is vital. Breaking down a long class into smaller chunks or mini lessons that are easier for learners to digest increases motivation by giving them the feeling of progress.

The “zeigarnik effect” states that learners are more likely to remember tasks in progress than those they have completed. The zeigarnik effect indicates that people are more likely to want to complete a task once they have started it. This means that when you separate your class into small chunks, it gives learners the motivation to complete all the sections once they have started. It helps learners comprehend the content better, learn more of it, and remember it longer. It also makes each class goal clearer, more specific and easier to achieve.

Concluding thoughts

So that’s it for this article. We hope that it will help you in your quest to create successful online courses.  Do you have any additional tips, techniques, or strategies that you would like to share with our readers? If so, leave them in the comment section below.

The 3 Most Common Mistakes Online Course Creators Make

Adding an online course to your product suite and having a passive income stream on autopilot sounds amazing, right? And it doesn’t only sound amazing, it truly can be if you put in the work and take the right steps at the right time to create a digital product that sells and is scalable.

But many course creators are guilty of either one or multiple of the following mistakes, which derails their progress before they even create the online course. Let’s shed some light on the three most common mistakes course creators make.

Related: 4 Crucial Things To Consider Before Creating An Online Course

Mistake No. 1: Not creating a proper foundation

Building an online course is no different than building a house. When you build a house, you make sure that its foundation will withstand storms. You also don’t start building the roof before you know the cement that makes up your foundation has dried properly.

So before you start recording your course content, you must validate your course idea and identify your dream students. You also need to create a name and a market proposition for your product that expresses the results of your course preferably in one word, or maximum in one sentence.

Paying lots of attention to building a strong foundation at the beginning will set you off on the right path to be able to scale later on.

Related: 5 Tips for Creating Your First (Successful) Online Course

Mistake No. 2: Never finishing the course

I speak to dozens of people every single day who have attempted to create an online course and have given up halfway through because they didn’t know what they were doing and didn’t know the next steps to take. Valuable knowledge has been temporarily parked on a Google drive, which then turns out to become a permanent parking spot.

It’s easy to get distracted and discouraged when you embark on a brand new journey yourself and you haven’t done it before. Many course creators think they can do it alone and it’s easy to “just record a few videos” and “chuck the content into an online platform” … but it really isn’t.

Creating an online course is a project, and it doesn’t happen overnight. Facing difficulties and hurdles is normal and will happen to you no matter what you do. It’s no different with online courses. You must prioritize and focus on finishing it.

Related: Are Free Online Courses Worth the Time and Effort?

Mistake No. 3: Not knowing how to market and sell your online course

At the beginning, the course is brand new to creators themselves, so it’s hard for them to market properly. Many course creators think they can just run Facebook ads to their sales page and see how it goes, only to end up burning lots of cash. If you are just starting out in your field and your course is new on the market, always start off with organic marketing

It takes time to perfect your marketing message, learn about your customers’ objectives and write amazing copy. If you write bad copy on Facebook or in an email, so be it. You lost some time, but you can go back and tweak the copy. But if you write the same bad copy and place ads on it, Facebook becomes a black hole for your hard-earned money.

Being successful with your online course does require you to build a strong foundation, create the amazing content your audience is asking for and figure out how to market it properly, short-term and long-term. Once you do, you will reap the rewards of your labor.

How to Teach Media Fluency Skills: 6 Cool Concepts to Try – Lee Watanabe

1.jpg

Teaching Media Fluency skills is crucial to the educational environment as technology continues to reshape how students think and react to digital media and the messages they receive. This is an important aspect of teaching that cannot be ignored. All students should be able to access, analyze, evaluate and create media in a number of forms. This shapes their understanding of how media affects society. They also learn why Media Fluency is essential in the digital age.

Possessing Media Fluency skills fulfill a number of needs:

  • They develop critical thinking capacity
  • Students can better identify target markets
  • They help students recognize bias and misinformation
  • They hone the ability to distribute personalized media messages

These are just a few effective lesson ideas that can be taught focusing on Media Fluency. You can make a definitive impact on shaping the minds of students and broaden their critical thinking skills with such activities. In the process, you’ll also provide an alternative perspective on media and how it is used. Students can look forward to building other important learning skills as an added bonus such as writing, researching, and analytical thinking.

1. Picture Prose

Students view an image of some sort. They then brainstorm about the events and characters that could be a part of the image. Next they write from a character point of view. They share their thoughts, feelings and the events that led up to the picture, or events that will take place after. This also supports narrative writing.

2. Fact or Fiction

Using Snopes.com, students will learn about urban legends and investigate why people believe in them. This happens through a discussion about sources of information. The focus is how to determine whether or not those sources can be identified as credible.

Introduce students to Snopes.com and to urban legends found on the site. Next, let them survey the information and identify additional sources to confirm whether the legend is true or false. Lead a discussion on how media can shape perception, whether true or false.

3. What’s in a (Digital) Name?

This is about creating a safe persona on the Internet. For this Media Fluency lesson, students discuss online personas and profiles through researching and discussing their names. Have them investigate the role that situation and audience play in using a nickname or full name. Determine what name would be most appropriate for social media and email.

They discuss what name they would choose and why it would best represent them online. More importantly, they discuss how it can be perceived by that platform’s audience.

4. Men, Women, and Media

Haver students explore representations of men and women and discuss their findings. They would construct a collage of images that represent men or women and discuss how each one is depicted in the media. The idea is to deconstruct those messages by identifying the source and how it may have influenced audience perception.

5. Copyright Capers

This Media Fluency lesson explores issues of copyright infringement through the discussion of downloading music from the Internet. Students will call upon prior knowledge and experiences on how they retrieve music online. Next they conduct Internet research to understand the history and legalities of copyright infringement. They would then synthesize the information and evaluate the content and their points of view. They will end up taking a stand on their beliefs of whether downloading is right or wrong.

6. Tech Reviews

Students get to employ analytical thinking in this one by reviewing a technology of their choice and researching reviews of that technology. The students will then use a list of evaluation and review questions to think about why the technology is used and why people choose one over the other. Have them write a personal evaluation of the technology and offer recommendations on the audiences it is best suited for.
