Long flowing sparkly dresses, flowers and fashionable suits were the attire Friday afternoon at Special Education Learning Facility, or SELF, School. The students at the facility were ready to dance the afternoon away at their annual prom.

It began with a grand march of the students parading to the gym, which was decorated with streamers and filled with balloons and music. Many of the students are in classes designed for those with severe and profound disabilities. Teacher Sarah Nelson, who has organized this annual event for the past five years, led the students into the gym as they waved to their classmates and parents. The SELF students were paired with vocational students form Valparaiso High School as their buddies.

Lily Dashiell, a home-schooled senior, was helping out at the prom. “I’m so excited,” she said. “I love this. Everyone looks so pretty.’
