Personal Financial Wellness: A Banking Opportunity And Imperative

Financial wellness at a personal level..Cognizant

Plenty of banks offer financial wellness tools. But by personalizing these offerings, they can support customers while also reinvigorating their brand, notes Andrew Warren, a leader in Cognizant’s UK & Ireland Banking and Financial Services practice.

With the explosion of digital banking during the pandemic, financial institutions (FIs) have their sights set high for growing revenues through digital channels. To do that, however, they’ll need to become more intertwined in and relevant to the daily lives of their customers.

One way to achieve this is by taking all the information they have about their customers and turning it into services that enhance customers’ financial wellness. Doing so would be especially welcome in the post-pandemic landscape and the financial uncertainty it has spurred.

To put it into perspective, more than 40% of UK adults are now considered “financially vulnerable,” and nearly 40% of UK adults have seen their financial circumstances deteriorate since February 2020.

Financial wellness at a personal level

While almost every bank now offers financial wellness tools of some sort, whether a budgeting app, a financial literacy course or education on financial planning, these services are generalized to all customers rather than addressing individuals’ personal financial wellness needs. Because financial situations vary greatly across individuals, the truly personalized element is vital.

For example, to help individuals build their savings, banks can use predictive AI technologies to understand customer transactions and cash flow patterns and automatically divert the right amount of extra funds to savings or investments. Royal Bank of Canada says it has helped clients save an average of $358 per month with this type of tool.

Further, by mining debit card data, banks can gain insights into spending habits that they can share with customers or incorporate into personalized offerings. Through AI-driven interventions, personalized “nudges” and micro-level targeting, banks can ensure customers take the steps needed to embrace their financial destiny.

Data and AI underpinnings

Achieving a new hyper-personalized banking future requires the right customer data and digitizing front-to-back-office operations. The financial services industry is arguably the most data-intensive sector in the global economy. Banks, in particular, have enormous amounts of customer data (e.g., deposits/withdrawals, POS purchases, online payments, KYC profiles). Historically, however, they haven’t been very good at utilizing these rich datasets.

By harnessing data responsibly — taking into consideration ethical and regulatory aspects, and striking the right balance between machine-driven and human-centric work — FIs can identify and serve new customer segments of one.

At HSBC, for example, customers can begin a conversation in the bank’s mobile app with an AI chatbot, answering simple questions immediately. Complex inquiries get passed to front-line colleagues. The AI system provides agents with details on the issue and guidance on how to resolve it.

We’ve been working with FIs to pull history and experience via AI into the conversation. We use emotion recognition tools (e.g., intelligent real-time language processing and sentiment analysis) to better understand the context of a customer’s inquiry and when a customer might be vulnerable, even if they’re not aware of it themselves.

This type of information can be harnessed to create personalized engagement plans that customize interactions. These tools can also enable banks to match agents’ personality and strengths with customers to help build deeper, more trusted customer relationships.

Time for a new approach

In addition to the customer benefits of personalization, banks can also realize cost savings and performance gains. According to Boston Consulting Group, hyper-personalization can lower rates of customer churn and boost sales, leading to annual revenue uplifts of 10%.

However, there’s plenty of work to do. Right now, only 45% of consumers are satisfied with the quality of personalized services they receive from their banks.

Here are three key ingredients for progressing toward personalized banking capabilities:

1. Technology

Banks need a mashup of data analytics, AI and automation to deliver personalization, intelligence and predictions at speed. This requires harnessing high-quality data to feed AI/ML algorithms so they can deliver experiences and services that anticipate customers’ needs, wants and desires, as well as combining automation with human supervision to build trust and empathy.

For example, we are working with FIs to link up data sources and introduce AI-powered algorithms that provide a dynamic view of a customer’s financial profile. This helps customers with their financial wellness plans and enables FIs to suggest products that enhance customers’ financial wellness.

2. Talent

Along with adroit technologists, banks need designers, anthropologists, ethnographers and others with social science pedigrees to apply human-centric design thinking to product and service development.

Social scientists are equipped to understand and apply the complexities of human behavior to help FIs predefine user personas and scenarios and use these to shape and personalize the experiences they provide.

In this spirit, we are helping a European state-owned organization to implement a user-centered digital product and service offering, including completely reengineering its mobile banking app. The existing app was plagued by a number of challenges, including a dated technology platform, poor user experience, low adoption and high cost-to-serve across non-digital channels.

We helped the organization define its go-to-market, mobile-first digital strategy, identifying key market-facing propositions based on user research as well as delivering these propositions at scale. Multiple subject matter experts were involved in the project from the outset to ensure a holistic approach, including program/project managers, scrum masters, data architects, human-centric design leads, UX and UI designers, researchers, developers, business analysts and process improvement specialists.

With this project, the bank aims to significantly increase its customer base over the next five years, by combining customer trust with a best-in-class user experience on its re-engineered mobile app, which puts it on par with challenger banks.

3. Culture

To drive change, customer well-being and digitization need to become part of the FI’s culture. This is more than merely embracing Lean methodologies and/or more flexible ways of working. Helping customers achieve financial wellness demands a fresh outlook that maximizes new, agile ways of working and data-driven approaches embedded enterprise-wide — from leadership down to every employee.

Turning the tables

For banks whose business models are based on profiting from customers’ lack of financial wellness (overdrafts, fees, charges, etc.), it can be challenging to adopt this approach. The majority of banks have a high cost-to-serve, with legacy infrastructures and high overhead.

In the face of tough competition from savvy fintechs and non-bank disruptors, however, it’s clear that incumbents urgently need to pivot their approach. FIs that incorporate personalized financial wellness into their business strategy have an outstanding opportunity to support their customers while also reinvigorating their brands — and realize growth and cost savings at the same time.

7 Misconceptions About Starting Your Own Business

Getty Images

Starting a business can be one of the most exciting and rewarding things you’ll ever do. The process has its challenges, but it’s important not to let misconceptions about them stop you from trying. In this article, we’ll go over seven common misconceptions about starting a business.

Misconception 1: You don’t need a business plan.

There are a lot of misconceptions about starting a business. One of the most common is that you don’t need to write a formal business plan. It’s easy to understand why this would be so — after all, who has time for more paperwork when you’re trying to keep things going as efficiently as possible? The problem with skipping the planning stage is that it can lead to wasted time, money and a poorer product or service than what you could have created.

An example of this is advertising: many start-ups spend thousands on ads without thinking through their audience, budgeting, or messaging strategy. Writing out a marketing plan before investing in any ad buys would help prevent these issues from arising and save you some cash along the way.

The reality is that there are several different kinds of plans — business plans (which detail your company’s overarching goals) and financial plans (which provide projections for revenues and costs) are examples — but they all have one thing in common: they help you visualize where your company is headed over time.

Misconception 2: You can entirely rely on your financing.

Learning the basics of running a business before seeking financing is essential. While it might sound great to have all that money at your disposal, you could end up in debt before you even start.

There are two common financial mistakes made by people who don’t have a lot of experience running a company. The first is relying too much on financing and not having enough personal money invested in the business. This leads to an over-reliance on loans, which can be difficult if the company goes under or runs into trouble. The second mistake is spending too much money on things that aren’t helping your business succeed — like a fancy office space or expensive furniture.

Misconception 3: You’ll have to choose between work and having a personal life.

You will not have time to handle every single detail. After all, you are now the head of your own company. That means you’ll have to balance running your business with everything else. You will not be able to handle everything by yourself. It’s okay if you need help from someone else. It’s expected.

You can delegate tasks that don’t require special knowledge or training, such as answering phone calls or taking out the trash at the reception. Still, there are some things only you can do because they involve special skills and experience that only come from doing them before.

For example, setting up marketing campaigns requires understanding how different channels work together for maximum effectiveness; updating website content requires knowing what keywords people search for when looking for information on a particular topic; creating invoices requires basic knowledge about accounting software programs like QuickBooks Pro.

Misconception 4: Everyone on your team will work as you do.

When you are starting a business, there will be times when things get complicated. The longer you have been in business, the more complex the challenges can become. This is just part of the journey; everyone has their own way of dealing with these feelings.

In my experience, though, I have found that rarely anyone will tell me when it’s time to stop and go home. And chances are you’ll keep working if you haven’t set boundaries. No one else should be expected to work as you do. After all, this is your company. You should temper your expectations of yourself with what you expect from an employee — and then act accordingly. If you fail to do this, your expectations will be unrealistic, and ultimately, nobody will want to work with you.

Misconception 5: You must compare yourself to other companies.

You’re new in your space. It’s important to capitalize on what makes you unique and slowly carve a market share for your product or service. At this stage, comparisons are unproductive and could lead to jealousy or negativity. Instead of comparing yourself to other companies, focus on your goals and how you can achieve them in the most effective way possible. You can learn from others, but don’t try copying their success — it’s not likely that someone else’s approach will work exactly as well for you as it did for them in their industry.

Misconception 6: There’s no room for error.

As a founder, it’s easy to mount a full load of responsibility on your shoulders. So much more becomes personal when you’re an entrepreneur. But remember, everyone makes mistakes. The important thing is to learn from them. If you’re not making any mistakes, you’re either not trying hard enough or have lost your ability to think creatively and independently — and that’s a problem.

Mistakes are part of the process. They tell you what works and what doesn’t. They teach valuable lessons about yourself, your product, service, customers and competition — all invaluable information for any entrepreneur building their business.

Misconception 7: Taking a risk is too risky when first starting.

Not making decisions based on risk can mean missing out on significant opportunities. Fear is why many people don’t try to start their own business in the first place — or even leave their current job for a new chance. When you can overcome your fears and take calculated risks that match up with your values and goals as an individual or company, you can do more than survive; you might thrive.

When fear enters your mind, remind yourself that it is often a sign that there’s something more prominent on the horizon if you choose to overcome it — and if there isn’t something bigger on the horizon for you right now, then find it. There are many opportunities out there waiting for those ready to take them on.

How Online Savings Accounts Work

Banking habits continue to evolve as consumers are given more and more choices of where and how they bank. While traditional banking still has its loyal fanbase, it’s hard to compete with the convenience of being able to manage your bank accounts from a computer or smartphone.

The appreciation for face-to-face human interaction that comes with the best banks and credit unions may never go away, but the reputation that traditional banks have for charging high fees and paying low interest rates might leave you wondering how exactly you’re benefiting from keeping your money there.

When compared with traditional brick-and-mortar banks, online savings accounts often offer better interest rates, giving your savings a chance to grow. This is especially true if you open a high-yield online savings account. Learn more about these types of accounts and how you could benefit from one.

What is an online savings account?

An online savings account is a savings account with a financial institution that usually doesn’t have any brick-and-mortar branches and operates fully online. Even though they’re completely digital, online savings accounts must follow the same banking regulations as traditional banks, such as Regulation D of the Federal Reserve limiting the number of withdrawals each month to six.

Since all of your interactions with your account take place digitally, you have the freedom to manage your savings when and wherever you like, without the hassle of having to add another stop to your schedule or having to wait for the bank to open. The websites and mobile apps for online banks are essentially storefronts, so online banks often devote lots of resources to make sure they’re optimized and easy-to-navigate. This allows you to skip the lines at the bank and seamlessly move your money around with just a few clicks.

The absence of physical locations also means online banks don’t have to pay the typically associated costs, such as maintenance or real estate costs. These savings are often passed on to online bank customers in the form of higher interest rates, lower fees, no monthly maintenance fees, and no minimum account balances. This gives customers more flexibility and freedom to do what they want with their money. This means they can be a good fit for financial goals like building an emergency fund.

Online savings accounts do have their drawbacks when compared to a traditional brick-and-mortar bank, however. If you regularly deal with cash, for instance, you might find yourself without any means of depositing into your account. That’s because some online banks don’t provide ATM access. This might require a separate checking account just to handle these sorts of transactions. For those who don’t want accounts spread across multiple institutions, this could be an inconvenience.

On the plus side, there are online checking accounts that provide debit cards that can even earn you cash back or that provide budgeting tools in their mobile apps. So it’s important that you shop around to see what each bank offers and to find the account that fits your needs.

How do deposits and withdrawals work in an online savings account?

Most online banks offer several ways to make deposits and withdrawals, though they might vary from bank to bank. Here are the most common ways to fund and get money out of an online savings account:

Depositing funds into your account

  • Transfer funds from a linked account, also known as an ACH (Automated Clearing House) Transfer (usually takes one to three business days)
  • A check, either by mail or mobile check deposit
  • Direct deposit from your employer
  • Wire transfer

Withdrawing money from your account

  • Transfer money to a linked account
  • Request a check
  • Outgoing wire transfer
  • ATMs, if your savings account is linked to a debit card

Things get a bit more complicated when it comes to depositing cash because of the lack of physical branches. While there are some online banks that have a few retail locations, like Capital One cafes, these are few and far between. If you find yourself needing to deposit cash, you can try one of these options:

Cash deposits

  • Deposit locally into an account with a physical branch and transfer the funds electronically
  • Buy a money order and deposit it like you would a check
  • Load cash onto a reloadable prepaid debit card, such as the American Express Bluebird card, and transfer the money electronically to your online savings account
  • Deposit into a ATM that accepts cash deposits (if available)

Top savings accounts for June 2022

With so many savings account options to choose from, it can all be a bit overwhelming. Factors like a high APY (annual percentage yield), minimum balance requirements, and fees are incredibly important when making your decision. You could get stuck with a low yield or hidden fees. Luckily, we’ve made it easy for you to pick the best option to start earning interest today. Check out our list of the best savings accounts for June 2022.

How to open an online savings account

If you decide that an online savings account can help you meet your savings goals or other personal finance goals, then you may be ready to open an account. The process for opening an online savings account is pretty straightforward. It should only take a few minutes and usually involves completing these steps:

  1. Fill out the application Here you’ll submit your personal identifying and contact information, including your name, date of birth, address, phone number, email, and tax identification number (such as a Social Security number).
  2. Choose your account typeYou’ll need to decide whether you want to be the sole account owner or if you want a joint account. If you choose to have a co-owner, you’ll need to enter the personal information of each account holder.
  3. Designate beneficiaries In this section, you can choose who will receive the money from your account in the event you pass away.
  4. Fund the account How much you must deposit depends on the bank — many require just $1, but others may require a larger minimum deposit to open the account. Once you decide on the amount, the most common methods to fund the account are by bank transfer, sending or depositing a check, or using a wire transfer.
  5. Set up your login information Since access to your savings account is online, you’ll need to set up a username and password to complete the setup of your account.

What kind of interest rates can I expect?

Higher interest rates are one of the major benefits of online savings accounts, though they vary from bank to bank. An account with Capital One 360, for instance, will give you an interest rate of 0.70% (as of June 3, 2022), while the Aspiration Spend & Save account offers up to 5.00% APY with Aspiration Plus (as of June 3, 2022). Online banks are generally a good place to look for a high-yield savings account with a competitively high APY.

How can online banks offer such good interest rates?

Because online-only banks don’t need to pay the employee wages, maintenance, and real estate costs associated with brick-and-mortar branches, they can charge fewer fees, require no minimum balance, require a low or no minimum opening deposit, and usually offer better interest rates.

What is the typical minimum balance for an online savings account?

The minimum balance requirement for an online savings account is usually structured one of three ways:

  • No minimum balance, which is typical for many online banks
  • A minimum balance to keep the account open, which could be as little as $1 or as much as several thousand dollars
  • A minimum balance to earn the advertised high interest rate, with anything less earning a lower APY

Is online banking safe? Is my money insured?

You’ll want to make sure your new bank has the words “member FDIC” somewhere on its website or marketing materials. The FDIC, or Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, is an independent agency of the United States government. If you deposit money at an FDIC-insured bank and the bank later fails, your money is protected (typically a maximum of $250,000 is covered) by that FDIC insurance

However, banks are not mandated to be FDIC-insured, so it’s always important to make sure the bank you’re considering is. To see if a bank is FDIC-insured, you can go to the FDIC BankFind page. If you are banking with a credit union, you’ll want to be sure they are covered by the NCUA.

Even if the account is insured by the FDIC, you want to make sure the bank you choose uses robust technology to protect your money because the FDIC does not provide reimbursements for fraud perpetrated against accounts.

Most banks offer some type of security guarantee and limited liability protection for its customers. Ally Bank, for example, offers a security guarantee, which states “that you will not be liable for any unauthorized Online or Mobile Banking transaction as long as you report the unauthorized transaction…within 60 days from when your statement is made available.” Ally also offers a range of security measures, from account monitoring to free anti-virus software that can protect up to three devices.

There are also measures you can take yourself to help protect your account from such events, such as setting up multi-factor authentication and text alerts, using difficult passwords, avoiding public Wi-Fi when accessing your bank information, and installing anti-virus software, to name a few.

Is your money stuck in an online savings account?

No. Just like a traditional savings account, your money is accessible to you when you need it. With just a few clicks, you can move money in and out of your savings and into another account.

Transfers to an account within the same bank are usually instant, while transferring to an account with a different bank might take a few business days before the funds are made available.

How To Make Your Child a Financial Whizz

Children need to start learning about money from a young age. Whether it’s the budgeting skills we need to cope with the cost-of-living crisis or the long-term planning that helps buy a house and save for retirement, the attitudes we pick up in childhood help shape the decisions we make for the rest of our lives.

Unfortunately, you can’t rely on schools to tell your child what they need to know. Personal finance lessons are not compulsory in primary schools and not all secondary schools teach crucial skills either. So, if you want them to grow up financially savvy, you’ll need to take matters into your own hands.

First, get started early. Children as young as seven can grasp the value of money, how to count it and what it means to earn money and exchange it for goods, says a study for the government’s MoneyHelper service (formerly the Money Advice Service). They can understand that you sometimes have to wait and save for things and that some choices are irreversible, say the authors, who are behaviour experts at the University of Cambridge. But they may need to be a little older before they appreciate the difference between luxuries and necessities.

The power of pocket money

The study found that allowing children to make age-appropriate decisions about their money can help them create positive habits. You can start with children as young as three or four, by giving them pocket money and letting them decide how they spend it.

“Once they are old enough not to put it in their mouth, then give them some money,” says Juliette Collier of the charity Campaign for Learning tells The Guardian. “If, for example, they end up wanting to spend that money on sweeties, then make it clear they can’t spend the money on something else. Let them make choices, and experience the consequences.” Introduce the idea of saving and show children that they may need to save their pocket money for a few weeks if they want to make a larger purchase. You could encourage them by offering to pay them a bonus if they save a certain amount.

An introduction to investing

As children get older, expand the topics. Teenagers can learn about investing through their Junior individual savings accounts (Jisas). If they have an investment Jisa, talk to them about what it is invested in and why. From the age of 16 they can make investment decisions about their account, but they can’t withdraw the money until they are 18. This could be a good opportunity to let them make some decisions about their investments.

It’s important to show them all the different assets they can invest in, such as stocks and bonds, as well as ways to do so, such as funds, investment trusts and exchange traded funds (ETFs). Doing this will reduce the chance that their first experience is with cryptocurrencies or other high-risk markets.

Before your child lives away from home for the first time, they need to learn about budgeting. Help them make a list of all their regular incomings and outgoings, such as subscriptions. Show them how much they spend each month then look at how much they have coming in. This is also a good time to discuss saving regular amounts for emergencies. Don’t forget to explain how tax and pensions affect your income. Show them your payslip so they can see how much of a wage is deducted for national insurance, income tax, and pension payments.

Finally, teach your child about debt. Discuss debts you may have, such as credit cards or a mortgage. Show them how the interest rate on debt is much higher than on savings. Explain how not repaying debts on time can affect your credit rating and your ability to borrow in the future. These lessons will hopefully help them avoid problem debts in the future.

“Instilling great money management behaviour in your children does not have to be an arduous exercise. You can help them learn by implementing a few key changes in and around your home,” Steward says.

Teach them budgeting by example – Include your children in family budget discussions from an early age. In older generations, money was often a taboo topic and not considered suitable for polite conversation. Break the cycle by talking to your children about money choices. For example, you could discuss how much money you saved over the lockdown period by eating at home, rather than eating out. Or talk to them about the monthly electricity bill and the cost of using your tumble-dryer in winter months.

Pay them in cash – You may give your child an allowance or expect them to do chores in return for a small payment. Either way, pay them in cash and then help them allocate those funds towards different costs. This is a great time to teach them Elizabeth Warren’s 50/20/30 budget rule. You could charge your children a 10% tax so that they learn the pain of being taxed early on. Warren’s rule is to divide up your after-tax income and allocate it as follows: 50% on needs (what you have to spend money on, for example, make them buy their own airtime), 30% on wants (such as the latest Playstation game), and 20% to savings. This will also open up the discussion about learning to differentiate between needs and wants.

Play money games – Learning can be fun. Include money games in family time. Monopoly is a game of luck but players also learn valuable lessons about the balance between spending and saving. The Game of Life starts each player out with a sum of money and as you advance through the game, you quickly learn that the players who choose to study are likely to have higher paying jobs and finish life on a more secure financial footing.

Take your children grocery shopping – This is less about the treats they can sneak into the trolley and more about teaching them to compare prices and shop wisely. Sometimes buying two 500g packets of pasta can work out cheaper than buying a 1kg packet of pasta. The lower-priced items are usually placed on the lowest shelves while the higher-priced items are at eye-level. When you spot a “special” sign, find out what the special is – sometimes, it’s simply the regular price with a special sticker on it.

Teach them about opportunity costs. Children are typically wired for instant gratification. Opportunity cost is simply the consequence of your financial choice, but very few people, let alone children think this far ahead. Spell it out for them until they start thinking differently. For example, “if you spend your money on this video game, you won’t be able to afford the wireless keyboard you wanted to buy next month.”….

Greenlight Debit Card and App Helps Kids and Parents With Money

Piggy banks may still be useful for some — but Greenlight, an Atlanta-based debit card and financial trainer app, is aimed at kids and parents as the latter teach the former about how to grow and manage money in 2022 and beyond.

“Greenlight is the family finance company that’s on a mission to help parents raise financially smart kids,” Greenlight founder and CEO Tim Sheehan told Fox News Digital in an email exchange on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022.

Greenlight, a start-up that’s only a few years old, today serves more than 4.5 million parents and kids. The company says families have saved more than $200 million and invested more than $10 million toward their financial futures through its programs.

Tim Sheehan is founder and CEO of Greenlight; he shared insights with Fox News Digital. He says that children can “learn to spend wisely” with his company’s debit card and app, with the help of guardrails and guidance.  (Greenlight)

“Financial literacy is one of the most important factors in our health and well-being,” Sheehan also told Fox News Digital, adding that it’s “the gateway to building a strong financial foundation for the future.”

He also that children need to understand the “difference between wants and needs. This is a financial fundamental … Once you help your kids nail this down, they can start learning how to spend wisely.”

What does the Greenlight card do?

The basic concept is simple: Teach kids how to handle money via a debit card that requires parental guardrails and guidance. After signing up for the service, parents load money onto the child’s debit card.

Kids can then use the card to make purchases virtually wherever Mastercard is accepted. Parents can also help kids set up the card to work with Apple Pay and Google Pay.

What does it cost?

The price of the basic service plan starts at $4.99 a month for up to five children. Plans that include investing for kids and parents, 1% cash back, and other premium perks are $9.98 per month.

How does the app work?

There is more to Greenlight than a debit card. Its app is useful for basic budgeting and handling transactions — and can be used for investing, too. With the app, kids can save, donate, and invest money. They can keep an eye on their balances, set financial goals, and research stocks.

For example, a child might set a goal of earning and saving money for a new skateboard — then track his or her progress toward earning enough money to actually make that purchase.

Parents can set up the app to allow kids to experience the real-life rewards of earning, spending, saving, and investing — with a built-in cushion that prevents them from making any seriously devastating choices.

The app enables parents to put training wheels on kids’ financial habits. When the kids are ready to do it on their own, the training wheels can be removed over time.

How does the card help kids?

Young people aren’t often taught how to be financially responsible or literate — with dire consequences. Young adults may complete high school and even college without a fundamental understanding of how to earn, save, and grow their money over time.

With the Greenlight app, kids learn early on to connect the work they do (such as household chores) with expanding balances — then to connect those growing balances with greater buying power.

When parents offer monetary incentives based on the quality of chores done, kids learn that work done well will be better rewarded than work done poorly. This valuable lesson will pay off when those children grow up and enter the workforce.

Though parents can put strict controls on how much a child can spend in a given category, some kids learn best by actual experience — even if that experience leads to temporary disappointment.

Some experiential learners might benefit from having the opportunity to spend a bit too much on frivolous items — then see exactly how poor choices delay the achievement of larger, more desirable goals.

Parents can allow kids just enough over-spending in one budget category to teach a lifelong lesson.

Why are adults using this card, too?

As a fintech app, Greenlight provides adults with a means of investing. “Fintech” refers to the use of technology to “improve and automate the delivery of financial services,” according to Investopedia. (Cryptocurrency, robo-advisers, and blockchain-based open banking are a few prominent examples.)

With Greenlight, parents can set up brokerage accounts to help fund college tuition, first cars, or other sizable expenditures. Families can also use the app to research investments in stocks and EFTs. How have young people improved their ‘financial literacy’ through these products?

Greenlight’s CEO Sheehan told Fox News Digital that in his view, “Gen Z is the most entrepreneurial generation to date, with 62% of Gen Zers indicating they’ve started or intend to start their own business.” He said that many “Greenlight kids” have become entrepreneurs and begun their own businesses.

Sheehan added that a 12-year-old girl used the card and app to start her own face mask business during the pandemic — and that she now donates 20% of her sales to charity. Another young person, a 14-year-old based in Alaska, used his savings from Greenlight to publish a book series, Sheehan said.

What’s the biggest mistake parents make in teaching kids about money?

“The biggest mistake parents make,” Sheehan said, “is not talking about money.” He added, “Kids and teens need to be taught that money is earned along with the importance of saving, spending wisely, and investing for the long term.”
