6 Benefits of Working Part-Time Instead of Full Time

With employers increasingly hiring more part-time workers and fewer full-time staffers, many in the workforce are considering the viability of part-time employment. Beyond the obvious income ramifications, there are hosts of advantages and disadvantages to consider when determining if the part-time employment model works for you.

Key Takeaways

  • Working part-time is ideal for family-oriented individuals – especially those who value the opportunity to pick up their young children from school.
  • Part-time workers enjoy increased free time in which to pursue extracurricular activities.
  • Not only can part-timers save on gas and car maintenance costs, but they may also be able to shave dollars from their monthly auto insurance premiums.

More Free Time to Pursue Other Projects and Activities

Arguably the biggest advantage of working part-time is the increased free time with which to pursue extracurricular activities. For those lacking the requisite academic credentials for their dream job, a part-time position may serve as a stepping stone that affords the flexibility to obtain the certification needed find roles in their desired profession.

Others may use part-time jobs to climb the ladder within an existing field. For example, an individual with a social work degree can obtain part-time entry-level work that lets them simultaneously earn the graduate degree needed to land a more lucrative mental health job.

Part-time jobs also appeal to those nurturing special projects, such as writing, civic outreach, and artistic endeavors. Such pursuits offer immense personal fulfillment, even if they don’t bring in large paychecks.

Opening Doors to New Job Opportunities

When there are no full-time positions available within a given company, workers may accept part-time employment to position themselves as the obvious candidate when a coveted full-time slot becomes available. A part-time job can also help individuals gain experience and training in fields unfamiliar to them.

After all, an employer who may be reluctant to hire an inexperienced person on a full-time basis, may be inclined to hire an eager candidate on a part-time basis if they express an enthusiastic desire to learn the trade.

Opportunity to Earn More Money

Although it may sound counter-intuitive, working part-time can sometimes enable an individual to make more money – especially if they are capable of balancing more than one job. For example, a person who pairs a 30 hour-per-week gig with another 20 hour-per-week gig may pull in a greater combined income than a single full-time position would provide. Furthermore, given that many full-time salaried positions demand 50- to 60-hour workweeks, this individual may still end up working fewer total hours.

Reduced Stress Levels and Improved Health

Studies show that full-time workers tend to feel worn out, due to insufficient time needed to exercise, enjoy the sunny outdoors, and generally commit to a healthy lifestyle.12 Contrarily, part-time workers have more time to hit the gym more often and get a better night’s sleep. Part-time employment also allows for more efficient management of daily tasks like grocery shopping, doing the laundry, and completing other household chores, ultimately resulting in more order at home.

«Paradoxically, voluntary part-time workers often experience decreased financial stress, because they conform spending to align with their income.3 This behavior is antithetical to the phenomenon known as lifestyle inflation, where one’s expenses actually expand with increased income. In other words: those capable of adjusting to a slightly lower standard of living often discover that working fewer hours is favorable to the demands of working full time.

The Importance of Family

Working part-time is ideal for family-oriented individuals – especially those who value the opportunity to pick up their children from school. Furthermore, part-timers may save on day care expenses, which may exceed the extra money earned by working full-time.

Although a certain income level is necessary to provide for one’s family, those who earn just enough to pay for essential living expenses, while sacrificing luxury goods, may find short-term work to be an unacceptable trade-off.

Saving Money on Transportation Costs

One possible situational advantage to part-time work lies in the area of transportation costs. Case in point: an individual who finds part-time work near their home may save more on transportation expenses than those who commute an hour or more daily to a full-time job. Not only can part-timers save on gas and car maintenance costs, but they may also shave dollars from their monthly auto insurance premiums, which are often mileage-dependent.

Secrets That Your Glasses Reveal About Your Personality

If you know anything about the history of glasses, you would know that they weren’t always viewed as a popular fashion accessory. Glasses for fashion used to be a remote idea that was only feasible in the galaxy far far away.

Specs were only used as a means for vision correction and anybody who wore them was either considered a nerd or a bookworm.

As portrayed in hollywood movies and shows, glasses represented shy or reserved souls who couldn’t do no wrong. Or they were used to portray insecure bespectacled ladies in rom-coms who removed their glasses to unleash the sexy diva within.

But, this negative reputation of glasses was soon refuted with the arrival of designer glasses frames that were everything from cute, stylish, nerdy to sexy.

It’s a different story now. People with 20/20 vision wear frames like transparent glasses or tortoiseshells to make a strong fashion statement.

The psychology behind glasses

Glasses shifted from being a vision necessity to being a staple fashion accessory. Today, the choices are abundant with different styles of frames in different designs and colours.

No matter if you wear glasses for fashion or specs with a prescription, they are saying a lot about you while sitting quietly on your face. Your eyewear holds the power to make you look trustworthy, honest, intelligent, or sophisticated.

Apart from sending cues about your personality, your designer glasses also help others to form a perception of you. They open the door for subconscious evaluation and here is what people might think of you.

You are easy to approach

Did we mention that glasses make you look more intelligent? So you better not act all surprised when people come to you to seek your valuable opinion on something. Especially if you are sporting transparent glasses or hipster frames.

Your eyeglasses help forming people’s perception of you. It is easier to strike up a conversation with someone who appears smart and trustworthy due to their specs than a non glasses wearer whose personality can’t be predicted.

It’s almost as if your glasses yield some kind of special powers. Also, wearing glasses is a way to tell the world that you are not embarrassed by your flaws (in this case, your imperfect vision). Instead, you are rocking your glasses with pride to let out your human side. What more does a person need to be approachable?

That becomes your signature look

We all have a signature look. It is described around the way we usually style ourselves. For instance, if you like to go bold on accessories, that becomes your signature style.

Whether you wear designer glasses in chunky frames or specs in thin titanium frames, they are making a statement about your style.

When you sport glasses every day, they kind of become your signature look. We are not saying that they define the type of person you are. But, they become an inseparable part of your overall appearance.

The signature look is not only for people coming from creative or artistic fields. You can be a student with transparent glasses or wooden frames and they become your signature look.

It is not a secret that glasses give a powerful boost of self-confidence. So, if you used to shy away from wearing them before, just bear in mind what wonders they could have done for your self-confidence and esteem.

They highlight your best features

What glasses you choose to wear is a matter of personal choice and style preference. We all want our individuality to reflect in our appearance.

Another good thing that comes along with wearing designer glasses is that they help you put your best features forward. If you have blue eyes, you can emphasize the colour with frames in blue shades or muted tones. And if there is a facial feature you would like to hide, glasses can do that as well.

In case you want your eyeglasses to just sit there without interfering with your overall look, transparent glasses or clear frames will do just that.

There are so many different types of frames out there. It all comes down to your features, skin tone, and lifestyle to choose the right one for you. If you fancy a rather minimalistic look, rimless frames are the best choice. Picking subtle frames when buying reading glasses online can be great too.

People identify you by your glasses

Eyeglass wearers have the advantage to distinguish themselves from the crowd. Thanks to their glasses, their individuality is far more prominent than those who don’t wear any.

If you like to wear those big chunky frames in weird patterns and unique designs, people will recognize you in a second no matter where you go.

Just like tattoos and lip piercings create a unique look, glasses are made to do just that, even more so, when you wear statement glasses. Transparent glasses might not be a smart choice when you are looking to distinguish yourself from other people.

For a unique look, don’t hesitate to go for intimidating frames like oversized glasses or quirky geometric specs. You can do that to your readers as well. You will find a variety of frame styles when you search for reading glasses online. Pick out a unique and bold style to stand out from the crowd.

They help you in your career

Since your glasses give out an intellectual vibe, they help you in situations like job interviews and things like that. Sounds a bit silly, right?

Wearing glasses makes people think that you are one of those intelligent people who will be the right fit for the job. If you are a man, stick to rectangular or square frames in neutral shades to do the interview right. If you are a lady, designer glasses cat-eye frames with modest curves and black colour will bode well with your career progression.

Now that you know what glasses are capable of, do you need any more reason to wear them? Even if your eyes are doing just fine, there are countless glasses for fashion out there for you.

5 Things All Professionals Need to Know About Finance

Here are 5 of the most important things that all professionals in non-Financial roles need to know about Finance…

1. Finance Concepts, Systems & Jargon

There is nothing worse than being in a discussion about a project at work, and not knowing what your colleagues are talking about! The language of Finance does not need to be daunting, and gaining an understanding of the common concepts, systems and definitions used by Financial colleagues will give an essential insight into company plans and priorities. From accruals, statements and adjustments, to reports, records and turnover, a basic understanding is helpful for everyone.

2. Interpreting Financial Statements

Understanding the implications of your organizations financial statements will provide insight into where things are going well, and where they can be improved. Whether you work in the Finance Department or not, it is still your responsibility to work towards the financial success of the organisation. A comprehensive understanding of the financial performance of a company, and the ability to analyse this, will give all individuals the skills necessary to plan, implement and review changes.

3. Business Planning & Budgeting

Planning and budgeting go hand-in-hand, so whatever your role, an understanding of the Financial context that you are planning in is essential. Plans can be acted upon more quickly when budgets are agreed and understood from an early stage. Moreover, the ability to co-operate effectively with Financial colleagues and oversee a project within budget demonstrates your competency, and will support career progression.

4. Investment

Knowing where an organisation is investing is indicative of where the company is likely to go in the next quarter, year, or five years. Knowing this helps all individuals focus on how their day-to-day activities promote this goal. Likewise, an awareness of where funds are being invested gives individuals the opportunity to offer informed suggestions for change if return on investment is not living up to expectations.

5. Diversifying Finance – You Know More Than You Think

Finance can seem daunting, but individuals in non-Financial roles can offer a new perspective to business calculations and numbers. Always remember that the numbers of the Finance Department reflect something far more real in the business, that you have probably been on the front line of yourself – always voice your opinion, and ask for clarification if you need it!

But before he became one of the elite, he learned the basics of investing in his early 20s.

This Big Think video is aimed at young professionals just starting out, as well as those who are more experienced but lack a financial background. Ackman takes viewers through the founding of a lemonade stand to teach the basics, explaining how investors pay for equity, a word interchangeable with “stock.” In the example, the owner starts with $750, with $250 of that coming from a loan. ———————————————————————————- WILLIAM ACKMAN: William Ackman is founder and CEO of Pershing Square Capital Management. Formed in 2003, the hedge-fund has acquired significant shares in companies such as JC Penney, General Growth Properties, Fortune Bands and Kraft Foods. Ackman advocates strategies of “activist investing,” the practice of using stock shares in publicly-traded companies to influence management practices in a way that benefits shareholder interests. ———————————————————————————- TRANSCRIPT: Hi, I’m Bill Ackman. I’m the CEO of Pershing Square Capital Management and I’m here today to talk to you about everything you need to know about finance and investing and I’m going to get it done in an hour and you’ll be ready to go. How to Start and Grow a Business So let’s begin. We’re going to go into business together. We’re going to start a company and we’re going to start a lemonade stand and now I don’t have any money today, so I’m going to have to raise money from investors to launch the business.

So how am I going to do that? Well I’m going to form a corporation. That is a little filing that you make with the State and you come up with a name for a business. We’ll call it Bill’s Lemonade Stand and we’re going to raise money from outside investors. We need a little money to get started, so we’re going to start our business with 1,000 shares of stock. We just made up that number and we’re going to sell 500 shares more for a $1 each to an investor. The investor is going to put up $500. We’re going to put up the name and the idea.

We’re going to have 1,000 shares. He is going to have 500 shares. He is going to own a third of the business for his $500. So what is our business worth at the start? Well it’s worth $1,500. We have $500 in the bank plus $1,000 because I came up with the idea for the company. Now I’m going to need a little more than $500, so what am I going to do? I’m going to borrow some money. I’m going to borrow from a friend and he’s going to lend me $250 and we’re going to pay him 10% interest a year for that loan. Now why do we borrow money instead of just selling more stock?

Well by borrowing money we keep more of the stock for ourselves, so if the business is successful we’re going to end up with a bigger percentage of the profits. So now we’re going to take a look at what the business looks like on a piece of paper. We’re going to look at something called a balance sheet and a balance sheet tells you where the company stands, what your assets are, what your liabilities are and what your net worth or shareholder equity is. If you take your assets, in this case we’ve raised $500.

We also have what is called goodwill because we’ve said the business—in exchange for the $500 the person who put up the money only got a third of the business. The other two-thirds is owned by us for starting the company. That is $1,000 of goodwill for the business. We borrowed $250. We’re going to owe $250. That is a liability. So we have $500 in cash from selling stock, $250 from raising debt and we owe a $250 loan and we have a corporation that has, and you’ll see on the chart, shareholders’ equity of $1,500, so that’s our starting point.

Now let’s keep moving. What do we need to do to start our company? We need a lemonade stand. That’s going to cost us about $300. That is called a fixed asset. Unlike lemon or sugar or water this is something like a building that you buy and you build it. It wears out over time, but it’s a fixed asset. And then you need some inventory. What do you need to make lemonade? You need sugar. You need water. You need lemons… Read the full transcript at https://bigthink.com/videos/learn-to-…
