Mothers never get a sick day. When you are the primary caretaker of the kids and household there is usually no one to step in so you can rest. When a mom does not get enough rest, she takes longer to recuperate. What is a mom supposed to do? Most of us keep momming no matter what! These hacks are a lifesaver when sick.
1. Take advantage of having groceries delivered. I know it can be expensive but most stores offer free delivery for the first order. Or a discount on delivery if you buy certain items. Some stores offer pick up service as well if you can drive.
Order plenty of orange juice and chicken soup for you. I order a few varieties of chicken soup to make that millionth bowl of soup less boring. Green tea with lemon and honey is a great option. Electrolyte water is another item I would consider stocking up on.
Order launchable’s, uncrustables, and plenty of convenience foods for the kids. Honestly, you need to stay off your feet as much as possible. A few days of eating these types of foods are ok. Most stores sell sliced fruits and veggies. Order those as well so the kids are getting their fruits and veggies.
Order enough tissues. I buy Lysol, Alcohol prep pads, Vitamin E softgels or rosehip oil, and nipple cream for breastfeeding. More on that in tip number two.
2. A runny nose can become red and raw fast. No matter what you put on it when you blow your nose it will come off. This is why I pierce a vitamin E soft gel and apply that to my nose. I then top it with nipple cream for breastfeeding moms. Lotions and oils transfer to tissue but nipple cream made of lanolin will stay on longer. Rosehip oil can soothe your nose too. The healing process after your nose stops running is much faster too.
3. Alcohol Prep pads are amazing for disinfecting items as you use them. Germs can live up to 24 hours. To prevent the spread of germs, I keep prep pads on hand to clean items after I use them to kill germs.
4. Skip cleaning. If you must spot clean only. Honestly, we clean and the next day the messes come back. Rest will not be detrimental. Consider asking children two and up to help. Small kids can put toys away. In fact most toddlers love to help. It never hurts to ask.
5. Make the days lazy ones. If the kids do not have school declare that no one needs to get dressed. This makes less laundry to do later. A Netflix marathon with the kids can allow you to rest. Make sure you have space so you do not spread germs to the kids.
Yes, the CDC may have finally cracked the case on why seven people in five states have gotten sick with Listeria from April 10, 2017, to November 12, 2019. It can be hard to figure out the source of a Listeria infection, since symptoms of Listerosis can take a while to appear. Typically, symptoms appear one to four weeks after the consumption of the bacteria but can take up to 70 days to manifest.
For this outbreak, public health officials had detailed info on five of the cases. Of these, nearly all, with only one eggs-eption, had reported eating egg-containing products. Three had consumed hard-boiled eggs in salads. The common source seemed to boil down to bulk, fresh hard-boiled eggs produced by Almark Foods of Gainesville, Georgia. Although there currently isn’t a recall of such products , you may want to be eggs-tra careful about eating hard-boiled eggs, especially if you are at higher risk for Listeria badness.
Those at higher risk for Listeria infections include those 65 years and older, pregnant women and newborns, and anyone with a weaker immune system. If you fall into one of these categories, you are are probably all right if you are doing the boiling and hardening of the eggs yourself. However, any eggs that are already hard-boiled may not be all right, especially if they are from Almark. If you find out a hard-boiled egg is from Almark, put the egg down, step away from the table, and make sure that everything that touched the egg is cleaned and disinfected thoroughly.
As I have described before for Forbes, a Listeria infection may just give you a bout of flu-like symptoms. However, the greater concern is if the bacteria gets into your bloodstream or central nervous system. That’s when a Listeria infection can become deadly. This outbreak has already led to four people being hospitalized and one dying. Listeria can also cause many problems for pregnant women such as miscarriages and premature births and their newborns.

Public health officials are encouraging consumers to take steps to reduce their risk of listeria infection after recent outbreaks of the foodborne illness. “Listeria is a type of bacteria that can be found in food products, and can cause quite serious foodborne illness in certain populations,” says Dr. Nipunie Rajapakse, a Mayo Clinic infectious diseases specialist. “We worry about it especially in pregnant women and their newborns, and people who have weakened immune systems, and in the elderly.” She says the most common foods that listeria infection is associated with are usually deli meats, hot dogs, and products that are refrigerated for a prolonged period of time. “Listeria is one of the few bacteria that likes to divide at low temperatures. That’s why we see this being a problem in foods that are refrigerated, and in foods that usually don’t transmit too many infections.” More health and medical news on the Mayo Clinic News Network http://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/
For the past year and a half, Keith Taylor and his wife have adopted a lifestyle that includes fasting on a regular basis. “For six days per week we don’t eat until around 5 pm, but eat as much as we want and whatever we want from 5 pm until we go to bed. It is not a diet in the classic sense — we do not restrict WHAT we eat or HOW MUCH we eat, but rather just WHEN we eat,” Taylor said in an email. Since the Taylors have been intermittently fasting, often called just IF, they’ve maintained a healthy body weight, been more alert and energetic, experienced less stress, and are less prone to getting sick. While Taylor admits that whether or not he will live longer as a result of his eating pattern is a “good question,” but he feels optimistic…….
