8 Simple Tips to Improve Your Business Blog

With the rise of the digital age, there are plenty of ways to get your business’ voice heard, but don’t discount the importance of your blog. Business blogging is a valuable investment that your business should be putting time and consideration into.

You’ve probably heard it before: blogging provides the perfect platform for thoughtful, long form content that will help you better connect with your target audience. So your business started a blog and then what happened? Did you see the results you were hoping for?

If done well, blogging can enable your business to experience many benefits beyond just sharing information with your audience. It can help you increase conversion rates, generate awareness of both your business and the products or services you offer, and can even play a major role in helping you boost your search ranking. In fact, if you keep your blogs updated, lively, and informative, and your marketing engine can coast effortlessly to lead generation.

But, if you don’t know what it takes to create a successful blog, you might be wasting your time. In this post, I’ll provide tips on how to improve your blog so you can reap all of its benefits and move your business forward in the digital world.

1. Learn about your audience

Starting a business blog will give your company a chance to nurture your website visitors and build a sense of trust between your ideal audience and your brand. But to build genuine connections with your target audience, it’s important that you write about topics they care about and that match where they are in their customer journey.

With that in mind, you need to have a detailed understanding of the people you’ll be writing for. One great way to do that is to develop buyer personas. If you’ve never created buyer personas, or if you’re unsure how to create them, try out this buyer persona template from HubSpot. It will walk you through how to conduct research to build buyer personas and create a clear picture of your ideal audience.

Once you’ve defined who your audience is with your buyer personas, you can use tools like BuzzSumo or forums like Quora to learn about what your potential buyers are searching for and connecting with on social media. Understanding your audience and their needs will help you better tailor your content to them and their interests.

2. Interact with other blogs

With so many online blogs, making your blog unique might seem like a daunting task. Remember that your blog should be a part of the wider conversation regarding your brand and your industry. You should be linking to other blogs and sources of research whenever you write a new piece of content. This can lead to an increased amount of sites backlinking to your own site, too.

While it may seem counterintuitive, you want other sites to grab your information, as long as they give you credit by linking back to your original content. Backlinks are like online referrals, with other sites saying they think your information is so good they’re pointing others there.

As you garner backlinks, search engines note the popularity of your site and move it up in search rankings. So, treat your links to other sites as networking tools to help improve the authority and relevance of your business.

3. Be consistent

Your blog needs to be a reliable source for your readers. Sporadic blog posts are frustrating for people who are interested in what your blog is saying! This means that you should be organizing what you post and when you post it.Consistency is key to building a steady audience that repeatedly comes back for more and moves through your sales pipeline.

If you haven’t already, consider creating a content calendar for your blog to help you better plan out your posts. Whether you choose to post every day, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, make sure you keep a regular schedule so that your readers know when to check out your latest content.

4. Highlight your products and services

Blogging isn’t necessarily about selling to your customers directly, but don’t underestimate the power of well-written blog to help convert prospects. Sharing information delivers a valuable sample of what you have to offer. In fact, did you know that 57 percent of the purchase decision is already complete before customers even call the supplier?

That means that most of the buying journey has taken place digitally before the customer has contacted a sales rep. So, your blog articles should act as an introductory sales person, highlighting the benefits of your products or services to help accurately inform your prospective customers.

5. Be a valuable resource

One of the best ways to attract more readers is to produce highly valuable content. This works on two levels. The first is that your current readers will recognize that you have depth of knowledge in your field and will continuously turn to you whenever they have a question pertaining to your industry. Think Neil Patel and Brian Dean, both of whom are marketing gurus with a huge following because they’ve proven themselves to be credible experts through their online content.

It’s similar to a test drive. Most auto buyers take a test drive before falling in love with a vehicle. Even those who have the willpower to walk away to “sleep on it” are drawn back. Your blog should do the same for your business. Readers click in, read, and cruise away; but you will inevitably pull them back for more if you’ve provided them with helpful content. The second level has more to do with your search rank and how it drives traffic.

Google’s number one goal is to create an incredible user experience, and it does that by providing searchers with the most relevant answer to their search query. So, if you’ve written the most valuable blog post on Google RankBrain (Iike Brian Dean did here), then Google will recognize that through your website analytics and will reward you by placing you higher on the SERPs. And we all know, the closer you are to the top of the results page, the more clicks you’ll attract. Not sure how to write valuable content? Check out this video from Moz on how to 10X your content.

6. Let your audience be a part of the conversation

Your blog should be a knowledgeable resource for users, but you need to be careful not to sound too removed from your audience. Readers want to feel like their engaging with a resourceful community, not being lectured by an anonymous source. You can achieve this by focusing on the tone and style of your writing.

Use your blog to generate action and gather user details (subscribe to a newsletter, follow, like, respond to a poll, etc.). Get them to interact with you, and be sure you give them some incentive to share their contact information with you.If your readers message you on social media or write a comment at the end of your post, make sure you respond. One major key to a successful blog is to build a relationship with your readers, and engagement is a sure way to help you build those relationships and increase your readership.

7. Write well

This seems like a pretty obvious tip, but it’s important nonetheless. Your blog should be easy to digest, so make sure to maintain a conversational tone and keep your paragraphs and sentences short. Incorporating pictures and white space throughout your post will help break up large chunks of text that are harder to read/focus on.And, always triple check for grammar and spelling mistakes. I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but multiple typos can count against your credibility and can easily convince readers to click out of your post. Try using tools like Grammarly to catch errors before you hit the publish button.

8. Focus on topics, not just keywords

SEO is part art, part math, part mystique. With search algorithm updates like Google’s RankBrain, search engines are getting better at understanding searcher intent, rather than just matching results to the keywords in the query. With this in mind, the best way to improve your rank is to prove you’re an expert on topics as a whole. One way to do that is to write quality content (see tip number five above) and the other is to write about various aspects of the same topic.

For example, if you’re a jeweler, you can write about the many aspects of purchasing an engagement ring, such as “How to Determine a Ring Budget that’s Right for You,” and “Why Cut is More Important than Clarity,” and “Diamond Alternatives for the Nontraditional Bride.”By writing multiple helpful posts about a given topic, rather than simply stuffing various keywords into one post, you can establish topical authority, and over time, Google will recognize you as the best resource for anyone searching about engagement rings. For more information about gaining topic authority, check out this post on how to create topic clusters.

Stick with it and see the results

If your business has started a blog, but you haven’t seen the results you were hoping for, try implementing these 8 simple tips to improve your blog. Don’t get discouraged if your blog traffic doesn’t skyrocket right away.As is common with content marketing, it may take a few months for your content to get indexed by search engines, but if you remain a consistent source for original, high-value articles, you’ll reap the benefits of blogging in no time.

Top Reasons Why Entrepreneurs Badly Need Email Validation

For 2017, HubSpot states that 86 percent of professionals prefer using email for business outreaches and that 86 percent of consumers “would like to receive promotional emails from companies they do business with at least monthly, and 15% would like to get them daily.”

If these won’t convince you into believing that emails are still as relevant as they were before, we don’t know what will. Companies that aim to increase their sales have noted actual gains in terms of the volume of qualified leads entering the pipeline. But this not just because they successfully wooed prospects with the right kind of content.

Having high clickthrough rates do not necessarily translate to increases in sales closes. Actual successes are only possible through establishing an effective mailing list validation. How is this so? Well, let’s look at some of the reasons.

#1. Your List is Full of Bad Addresses

When building a mailing list, you can’t expect that it will be filled with actual people. Sometimes, invalid addresses can enter the list without you noticing. This can only spell trouble, since having bad email addresses around can only swell your bounce rate. Worse, the emails you send to actual email addresses will get thrown to the spam folders. Cleansing your database free of unwanted addresses can prevent this from happening.

#2. Your list is full of errors

What’s even more critical than bad email addresses? Addresses that are spelled wrongly, that’s what! Human errors can often result in emails targeting the wrong people or not targeting anyone at all. Again, this will lead to the same issue caused by bad email addresses. Unless you want to see your bounce rates get insanely high, you can take the crucial step of pinpointing misspelled addresses and verify them.

#3. You’re Sending too Many Emails to the Wrong People

HubSpot points out that 78% of consumers unsubscribe to from emails. tweet!

This is due to several reasons, but the most common would be that these prospects are not interested in the brand anymore and that the sheer number of emails they receive daily has become all too annoying! One way to iron this out is to verify your mailing list and filter out any unresponsive addresses. That way, you would be hitting your targets more accurately.

You’re Spending Too Much

With all these issues taken into account, you can say that not having an effective mailing list validation can cost you a lot of money. You will be spending precious resources rather than growing revenue. With mailing list validation, you can increase sales because you will be engaging the right business partners from a sea of prospects.

Prioritizing Your Inbound Marketing Strategies for 2021

Marketing is a continually evolving landscape. You know this. We know this. But 2020 presented a different challenge than previous years, leaving marketers to dig deep into what they need to do to attract and nurture leads and customers.

2021 will be no different – which shouldn’t make you panic! Part of marketing is doing your due diligence, and we’ve combined resources to come up with some powerful strategies to consider prioritizing in 2021.

SMS Marketing

The popularity of SMS was already accelerating pre-COVID, but the pandemic made the importance of quick, timely, relevant messages more necessary than ever. People needed fast updates on everything, from closures to switches to remote learning. And SMS marketing provided that, plus an average 98% read rate.

SMS marketing is also useful for both leads and customers in non-COVID-related campaigns, as you can implement various campaigns that are engaging to both audiences. For example, for current customers, you can send them text reminders of appointments or meetings. For leads, you may consider sending them branding awareness campaigns or coupons that may encourage them to buy from you.

The best part? With a platform like SMSZap, getting started with SMS marketing is a breeze. You can set up your account in a few minutes, link up with your contacts in HubSpot, and send personalized and engaging messages.

Content Marketing

COVID restrictions sent most people home at one point – to shop or work, or both. This made the demand for digital consumption skyrocket. What does that mean for your efforts in 2021? Your content needs to be high-caliber and plentiful, as well as:

  • Interactive
  • Emphatic
  • Engaging
  • Relevant to current events (2020 saw everything from social change, major elections, and COVID)
  • Made for the diverse crowds

That translates to creating and sharing educational, quality content about your products, services, and your company to your prospects and customers. You can use various resources like blogs, ebooks, infographics, social media, and videos to deliver your messages. No matter what type of content it is, it should address your target audiences’ specific pain points at every stage of their buyer’s journey, including the awareness, consideration, decision, and delight stages.

Video

Video can technically be considered a part of your content marketing – but its importance in our “new normal” isn’t something to shrug your shoulders. People longed for some human connection that they couldn’t get in person. Think about how you can use video in your previously “typical” marketing efforts. Are you switching to more online conferences, events, or webinars? These remote types of content are not going anywhere soon.

Similarly, video is just proven to be a useful tactic. In fact, 79% of consumers reported that a brand’s video convinced them to buy a piece of software or an app. A whopping 92% of those viewers also said they shared videos with others. That alone should help you realize the value of investing in video creation and distribution.

Chatbots and Customer Support Automation

When COVID initially hit, people scrambled to cancel flights, hotels, concerts, trips, appointments; you name it. The importance of a quick and solid customer support experience was integral. But customers weren’t the only ones dealing with the consequences of such an uncertain year. Support agents were hit with an influx of tickets to their helpdesk. Fortunately, chatbots and other customer support automation helped and will continue to in 2021.

Chatbots automate specific tasks and conversations by speaking with a customer or prospect through an easy-to-use interface. They lighten your teams’ workloads by tackling more straightforward conversational functions that are necessary but can eat up time. Advanced customer service automation can offload a large portion of support tickets with a high degree of accuracy. These resources also delight users because more and more people want information as quickly as possible and don’t mind speaking over a chat application.

Social Media

2020 certainly had a prevailing theme, and it was that a lot of people were at home for a good portion of it. Because of this, more people were also on their phones searching for news and updates from their favorite brands. One of the most common places to find this is generally a company’s Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn.

Brands recognized this too. In fact, social media budgets accounted for 24% of all marketing budgets during the second quarter of 2020. And the momentum kept. There’s tremendous opportunity to ride these coattails and continue engaging and re-engaging with new and existing customers through fun, engaging social media campaigns or advertising.

SEO

When the pandemic subsides, businesses with brick and mortar locations will likely want to send as many people as possible back into their stores. Local search engine optimization (SEO) can help. Try:

  • Optimizing your “Google My Business Page”
  • Including local keywords throughout your website content
  • Strengthening your social media presence and including location-specific content

Position Zero, or Google’s featured snippet, should also take precedence in 2021. As humans become more reliant on technology, they expect the best answer as fast as possible. Position Zero has the most relevant information that answers that user’s question without clicking on any link. Some advice on getting a featured snippet includes:

  • Figure out what your company can get a snippet for
  • Writing out the exact question you’re trying to answer in your website or blog content
  • Use lists or tables
  • Research related questions and answers – any question can lead to another!
  • Create high-quality content that isn’t stuffed with keywords .

Another vital thing to consider when tackling SEO is to remember that people are searching for things differently now. People are asking more questions or phrases rather than just words. They’re also using devices like Alexa or Google Home. Search engines recognize this more nuanced context, meaning, and intent to deliver results, so keep it in mind for 2021.

https://www.whitehat-seo.co.uk/ This presentation was made my Karen Rafferty from HubSpot as part of a seminar at the London HubSpot User Group in London. This video will show you the best tips for implementing a great inbound marketing strategy. You can download the free eBook here: https://info.whitehat-seo.co.uk/tips-… The full transcript of the video can be found here: https://blog.whitehat-seo.co.uk/inbou… Slides can be downloaded here: https://info.whitehat-seo.co.uk/londo… A summary article covering the main points is available here: https://blog.whitehat-seo.co.uk/tips-… We propose is to start to deploy a strategy to both your sales and marketing activities in your business.

It’s important just to reiterate here that with inbound marketing what we’re essentially doing is trying to focus on attracting good fit leads or opportunities for your business. And we do that through producing meaningful content that can enable you to have meaningful interactions with potential customers. It’s about just having good social etiquette. I’m, it’s not about interrupting people, it’s about actually being helpful, being responsive. Being very human in the way that you employ your marketing and your sales strategy. Which of the strategy from the video works best for you in 2018. Let me know by leaving a quick comment below. 4 Tips For Starting a Business In an Economic Downturn

1

COVID-19 has forced millions of companies to reassess their , but what about the businesses that are still just ideas in the minds of aspiring entrepreneurs? As mass layoffs and desperate bailouts dominate the news, few people are talking about what it’s like to launch a business in the current climate.

But like other crises throughout history, the coming will create genuine opportunities for founders. As Michael Loeb, founder and CEO of Loeb.nyc, said, “Moments like these are like forest fires. The blaze will cripple some businesses, but they will also provide the heat to release new seeds into the soil. Many amazing companies have been born from the ashes of economic downturns and market crashes.”

The 2008 housing and financial crash saw people in the U.S. seeking affordable accommodation without long-term commitments. That’s when emerged as a cheaper and more flexible alternative to traditional housing. By 2011, Airbnb was valued at more than $1 billion.

If you think your business idea is ready for the next step, position it as a solution to emerging . Here are four tips that will help.

1. Find your niche.

Industry-defining companies like Airbnb take form during recessions. Are you able to address a unique niche right now — offering a solution to help people get through the current ? Alternatively, can you adapt your original idea to address that niche?

Take a moment to step back and assess the world around you. Identify the issues faced by friends, co-workers, people in the news. Envision the potential solutions to problems that aren’t being answered by what’s currently out there.

Many such niches are getting carved out amidst the current turmoil. Both healthcare and education — two of the most vital industries in any society — are seeing significant disruption. These industries need innovative reconstruction initiatives urgently. Education hadn’t been disrupted meaningfully in 100 years. Now parents and students are looking to optimize their time, online resources and teacher interactions to avoid losing months of study.

If your product or service doesn’t yet fit a current need, see if you can adapt it to fit the new normal. Conditions won’t be normalizing anytime soon — adaptability is a strength. Do you have a software product that can, for example, improve users’ videoconferencing experience, even if it wasn’t initially designed to do so? Can your service facilitate businesses’ online experiences or communications?

If you can fill a niche with your product, do your best to seize this chance — such opportunities are scarce. As Jonathan Greechan, co-founder of global pre-seed accelerator Founder Institute told me, “You want to be skating towards where the puck is going, not where the puck is right now.”

2. Give people what they need: connections and connectivity.

During a downturn, people are less inclined to buy things that don’t address real needs. Frivolous products will fail. The ideas that work are focused on solving one problem well.

What do people need right now? What do you need right now?

One thing everyone needs is connection. Become indispensable by creating and strengthening connections between people. You won’t be able to do this without harnessing your online presence — the more interactive, the better. Use digital tools to market yourself and build relationships with your customers. is a light-hearted way of reaching younger consumers. can propel the visual elements of your product and initiate debate. Throw a Houseparty launch event. Intimacy and online connection are the pillars of the new normal — even when large gatherings are again permitted, securing your online presence now will guarantee you greater exposure in the future.

Keep privacy front of mind, or you’ll lose trust fast. South Korea and the U.K. have developed apps to track COVID-19 infection rates, but privacy advocates have raised concerns about how the tech accesses personal data. Stay one step ahead of such pitfalls by looking at what other companies (including your potential competitors) are doing and learn from their mistakes and successes.

3. Ready yourself personally to take the plunge.

Look in your wallet. If getting investors to cough up seed funding was hard before, it’ll be far more challenging now that they’re tightening their belts.

“Investors aren’t looking for ideas right now — they’re looking for businesses with a team and traction,” Greechan says. “You need to have some minimum expendable capital to get your business idea off the ground and raise more funds.”

If your savings are a black hole and you’re currently unemployed, you may have to take a step back. Of course, you could ask friends or family to invest, but this is a trying time for everyone, so tread carefully: You don’t want to alienate those close to you in your time of need. Consider bringing a partner on board, but be aware that they’ll want to see you contribute financially, as well — at least a couple of thousands of dollars.

Also, ask yourself honestly if you’re in the right headspace. To be a business leader in a time such as this, you need to:

  • Be open and creative, so you can see the world from different angles and identify opportunities where others can’t
  • Have the fluid intelligence to solve new and unexpected problems as they come

If you’re preoccupied with other parts of your life, your ability to be open and flexible may be compromised.

To capitalize on your strengths, be disciplined. Write a checklist every morning with the things you’ll achieve that day, such as reaching out to industry leaders you want to partner with or designing your . Take things one step at a time, despite the sense of urgency. Get feedback at all stages of your MVP development. Your MVP doesn’t have to be refined or expensive at this stage — it just needs to embody your idea and can test how markets will respond to it. If you

currently have a full-time job, don’t quit until you’ve received strong and positive reactions to your prototype.

4. Reap the benefits of launching during a recession.

With the , the majority of companies that support new businesses are offering discounted rates. Shopify, for example, is offering a free 90-day trial, and HubSpot has suspended marketing email limits and dropped the cost of paid ads significantly. For an entrepreneur, the cost of launching is less expensive than usual and will probably stay that way for the next 12 months.

Another perk of the current climate is the broader range of available talent available. Many major companies have been struggling. Airbnb laid off 25 percent of its staff due to the pandemic, for example. Many highly skilled workers are now looking for roles. Previously unattainable recruits are now within reach.

The sweat equity of new employees is as valuable as financial equity. Their professional experience will help you understand when to start pitching and approaching potential clients.

A recession is when category-defining companies take form. Just as cryptocurrency companies boomed when confidence in banks and traditional systems reached an all-time low, businesses that propose alternative solutions to common problems during crises have an advantage over competitors.

Can You Get a Degree in Content Marketing? Top Classes for Skill-Hungry Students of All Ages

4.jpg

Before I co-founded my company, Masthead Media in 2012, the practice of content marketing was very much experimental. Very few people outside of the still-nascent industry had even heard the term before, and it was virtually impossible to find a single class–let alone a full certificate program–that focused on content marketing.

Today, content has become an essential way that brands connect with audiences and its a compelling career field with ever-growing income opportunities.  Because there’s so much interest among would-be students, several companies (and at least two universities) have begun offering courses designed to prep the next generation of content marketers.

If you’re looking to make a career transition, or simply want to expand your skills as a marketer, here are six programs you should definitely consider.

While I wasn’t able to find a university that offers a full-degree program in content marketing (I predict that time will come soon!), NYU’s School of Professional Studies does serve up this eight-session in-person course that focuses on the strategic planning side of content.

In addition to traditional lectures taught by an instructor, you’ll hear from real-world speakers who are actively working within the content industry and break out into smaller groups to work on projects.

During the course, you’ll learn how to align a brand’s goals with specific kinds of multimedia content, repurpose content to maximize its value, and use analytics to tell if your efforts are working. One hidden benefit to attending this course (where I’ve a been a speaker) is networking opps: many students already work for major brands and are in class to sharpen their skills.

Cost: $900

The T Brand Studio (the branded content unit The New York Times) is renowned for executing groundbreaking campaigns with major advertisers such as Delta, Netflix, Adobe, BMW, and GE. Together along with the School of the New York Times, T-Brand is sharing its extensive knowledge of content marketing with students through this five-course online certificate program.

This beautifully shot digital program details the specific tools the T-Brand Studio uses to create high-quality native advertising (a specific element of content marketing) on behalf of brands. Taught by current and former T-Brand Studio staffers, the courses include “Story Mining and Strategy,” “How to Tell Brand Stories with Video,” and “Thinking About the Other Side?” a video geared toward journalists looking to make the switch to from journalism to branded content.

Cost: $1,450

I’ve been turning to HubSpot for years for well-written, insightful articles teaching every aspect of inbound marketing and customer relationship management. Considering the emphasis that the inbound marketing company puts on education, I’m not surprised they developed an 11-course, 32-video series design to teach students the fundamentals of content marketing. What’s amazing is that you can watch the courses online in a single afternoon: It takes just 4 hours to view them all (the related quizzes will take you a little longer)

The Hubspot course will help you learn a basic framework for producing goal-oriented content on a consistent basis, and to create (and repurpose) content designed to please both people and search engines. It’s a great way to learn or brush up on the fundamentals of content marketing before creating and executing your own strategy.

Cost: Free

Even if you’re getting into content marketing because you’re passionate about words, it’s critical to understand how to use the numbers to help you tell a better story. No platform is more widely used to do exactly that than Google Analytics. Most major brands use GA to track how customers are interacting with their content–but content teams don’t always know how to interpret the numbers and use them to make strategic changes.

If you want to make use of all of that incredible data, take full advantage of Google Analytics Certificate program. The course is the gateway to learning how to set up analytics on a website, customizing the numbers and information that you’re viewing, and staying on top of changes Google is making to the program. The videos and quizzes are super short–and you can come back to where you left off during your last lunch break viewing.  For those looking to transition careers, having a GA certification on your content marketing-focused resume is a major win.

Cost: Free

Okay, I’m officially obsessed with LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda.com), which I originally begin using to amp up my skills as an amateur photographer. Now I know it has a lot to teach me about content marketing, too.

The site (and related app) offer thousands of individual videos and full courses focused on every aspect of content marketing, from SEO Keyword Strategies to Marketing on Instagram to Becoming a Thought Leader.

Because I watch these videos and courses on my commute (and can’t stream content while underground on the subway) I love that I can download and watch them offline. It’s also really nice to see comments and rating from other LinkedIn users which gives me a good sense of whether any individual class or course will be worth my time.

Cost: Starting at $25/month or free with LinkedIn premium memberships

SEO is one of the trickiest aspects of content marketing to master–but doing so is crucial to ensure the content you spend hours and hours perfecting will actually be discoverable by a wide audience.

Udemy offers an easy beginners course (2.5 hours of video, 7 hours of audio), to help you learn how to add valuable keywords, tags, and search engine vocab into your brand’s or clients’ content. You’ll also get a stronger understanding of how to write content with search engines in mind, and check out SEO case studies from the AARP and Southwest Airlines.

Udemy offers plenty of other content marketing courses, which, like LinkedIn Learning, feature ratings and comments to help you hone in on the course that’s right for you.

Cost: SEO training is free; most courses starting at $11
