4 Job Interview Mistakes That Can Cost You Thousands In Salary

With many companies laying off workers in 2023, competition is increasing for high-paying roles. Put more money in your pocket by avoiding these common interview process mistakes I’ve seen as a former recruiter.

Leaving Your Salary Alignment Unconfirmed

In previous generations, it was considered rude or presumptive for candidates to ask about the salary alignment up front. I was personally told it made me seem like I cared more about the money than the job. Unless you have the free time to go on purely exploratory interviews, move forward with a formal job interview only if you are clear that what you are willing to accept is within the range the employer is willing to pay.

Eight states have established, and at least 15 states are exploring, salary range transparency laws. Though the salary range might be public on a job posting, I’ve often found them to be inaccurate as they are often copied from old job descriptions. Even if you do not live in one of these states, it is acceptable for you to ask the recruiter to confirm the salary range for the role during your first-round interview.

Websites like Salary.com, Glassdoor and PayScale are a good place to start, but they often show ranges that are unreasonably large — for example, $50,000 to $150,000 — which aren’t very helpful. Some sample questions you can use to confirm the salary range fits your expectations are:

  • I found this salary range for a similar role in my research. Is your company competitive with this range?
  • What quartile within the range are you targeting for this role?
  • What was the salary of the last person who was in this role?
  • My target salary is around this amount. Is this within the budget?

If employers are not willing to share at least a reasonable range for a role, it’s a red flag that they are unclear on how they value this position within the organization.

Waiting To See The Cost Of Health Benefits

I’ve interviewed hundreds of candidates as a human resource professional. In those experiences, most people knew to ask what benefits were offered, but very few asked how much those benefits would cost them. I’ve encountered several cases of employees who were surprised at the amounts deducted on their paychecks because they didn’t know the details beforehand.

Before you accept any job offer, be sure to ask for the paycheck deductions for each of your health, dental, vision, life and disability insurances. Small differences can add up to big amounts if you don’t pay attention, but they also can yield big savings that can create more room for negotiation in the base salary. Do a thorough comparison between coverages to estimate what your potential exposure could be under new health plans. In particular, compare the:

  • Deductible
  • Co-Pays
  • Coinsurance
  • Out-Of-Pocket Maximum

For example, when I left one employer to join another, the new employer paid 100% of the employee’s health insurance. So even when they came back to me with a lower salary offer, I was willing to accept it because at around $100 per paycheck at my current employer, I was able to save $2,400 a year in my salary with the new benefits.

Overlooking The 401(k) Details

The first three companies I worked for all had 401(k) plans with company matches, and the subsequent three companies I worked for did not have company matches. Like most people, I focused more on what they offered me in salary and in hindsight I wish I had stayed at the companies with 401(k) matching because that was free money I could have invested to retire earlier.

The details of 401(k) plans are often difficult to understand. So it’s important to work with your recruiter to learn how the money is matched and when those funds are considered yours. “Vesting” in a retirement plan means ownership of the money. Any dollars you contribute are 100% yours, however money matched by the company might not be yours immediately. For example, many companies have vesting schedules that allow you to own your matching funds after each year of service.

If a potential employer has a match in its 401(k) plan, consider that amount as part of your salary. If you are leaving a 401(k) match from your current employer, it’s a great negotiation point in asking the new one for more salary.

Ignoring Cold Calls From Recruiting Firms

If you are ever approached by a reputable recruiting agency on LinkedIn or via e-mail, it is always worth at least a conversation after you’ve confirmed the salary range. Third-party recruiters are hired by companies who have hard-to-fill roles and are tasked with finding highly vetted candidates. So, if they’ve reached out to you, there’s a good chance they already think you are a fit.

You can and should use the information you learn from agency recruiters to better inform your own salary negotiations within your current organization, as their data is from live searches now. I personally was able to jump from $53,000 to $90,000 with one job move thanks to an agency recruiter who reached out to me.

Do not, however, pay a recruiter to find a job for you. Reputable agency recruiters are only paid if you are a successful candidate, and they are paid by the employers, not the candidates. Agency recruiters make great partners as they are incentivized to be transparent about the salary and will prep you as much as possible to succeed in the interview.

Most people only start looking for a new job once they absolutely need it. Even if you are not actively looking and happy in your current role, building a relationship with a third-party recruiter within your industry can help you keep a pulse on key trends. It also can keep you top of mind for roles that might be a better fit in the future.

New Research Shows Remote Work Essential For Caregivers

Work from home jobs for caregivers have been on the rise in recent years, and for good reason. A recent study by Mother Honestly and Care.com found that 73% of caregivers use the time they save from working from home to care for their children, and 70% use it to spend more time with their partner or spouse.

This report shows that remote work can be vital for work-life balance, and employers must take note of these findings before deciding to eliminate remote work. Having helped 21 organizations as a consultant in implementing hybrid work, I talk to a few leaders every week about how to manage their workforce talent strategy. And inevitably, parents and other caregivers come into the picture.

One of the main benefits of work from home jobs for caregivers is that it levels the gender playing field. Traditionally, caregiving responsibilities have been shouldered by women, but the ability to work from home has made it easier for men to contribute to child care and household chores.

The study found that 47% of men with a child under 15 felt they could spend more time with their kids and better help out their partners. This is a significant shift and it means that more opportunities are opening up for women to slow down on the homefront and ramp up on the workfront.

Additionally, managers and caregivers are on the same page when it comes to remote work. The study found that 77% of managers and 76% of caregivers agree that remote work improves workers’ overall quality of life. This is a significant shift as it shows that remote work has finally proven itself after three years of uncertainty from leaders.

It’s important to note that remote work doesn’t have to have a downside. Many workers and leaders are worried about the threat remote work poses to career advancement. The study found that 58% of women and 64% of men say remote work limits their career, while 48% of managers believe showing up to the office equates to more advancement opportunities. However, if employers truly commit to implementing a flexible and inclusive workplace, remote work can be a win-win for both employees and employers.

One of the challenges that companies face when implementing remote work is cognitive biases. Attentional bias can play a role, as managers may only pay attention to the negative aspects of remote work and ignore the positive benefits, despite the new research about the benefits of remote work for caregivers.

Another cognitive bias that can impact companies is the status quo bias. This bias can lead managers to prefer the status quo, even when it’s not the best option. For example, a manager may prefer to keep their employees in the office, even though remote work would benefit both the employees and the company through helping caregivers stay at their jobs.

Functional fixedness is another cognitive bias that can impact the remote work discussion. Managers may view remote work as a fixed concept and may not consider different variations of remote work, such as a hybrid model, that may better suit the company’s needs and help to provide work-life balance for caregivers.

The empathy gap can also play a role in the remote work discussion. Managers may not be able to fully understand the challenges that caregivers face and may not fully appreciate the benefits of remote work for caregivers.

It’s important for employers to understand that remote work can level the gender playing field, with men stepping up more than ever before due to newfound flexibility. Remote work also improves workers’ overall quality of life and can be a win-win for both employees and employers if implemented correctly.

However, employers must also be aware of the potential downsides of remote work and how cognitive biases can impact their decision-making process. It’s essential to consider different variations of remote work, such as a hybrid model, that may better suit the company’s needs.

Additionally, employers must understand that remote work can also have a positive impact on the company’s bottom line. A recent study from Stanford found that companies that offer remote work options have lower turnover rates, which in turn can save the company money in recruitment and training costs.

Work from home jobs for caregivers are becoming increasingly important as the need for work-life balance becomes more pressing. Employers must take note of the benefits of remote work for caregivers, and be aware of the potential downsides and how cognitive biases can impact their decision-making process. By implementing a flexible and inclusive workplace, employers can reap the benefits of remote work for both employees and the company.

How To Learn To Stop Worrying And Love The Inbound Marketing Process

We live in a day and age when we can basically have whatever we want the moment we want it, and this has conditioned us to crave and often expect immediacy. For example, want a burger at 10 p.m.? That’s no problem because there are likely eight places within a 10-mile radius of you that can have it ready in minutes.

Of course, this is the exact opposite situation when it comes to inbound marketing. Inbound marketing is the long play, and it took me a long time to stop worrying about seeing quick results and begin to love the process.

Here’s how I did it, and how you can too.

Accept The Six-Month Slow Burn

On average, it takes around six months for your efforts to begin paying off. Once you accept that there is no immediate gratification with inbound marketing and that a campaign can take half a year to start yielding results, you can stop stressing and instead enjoy the act of building a great strategy.

For some perspective, a study by HubSpot found that 83.9% of companies that used inbound marketing were able to increase lead generation within seven months. Did those companies think it would take seven months to see results? Probably not. But did they give up on their efforts? Clearly not.

Inbound marketing does work, but it takes time.

Stick To The Process

Accepting the fact that it can take a long time to see any results from your efforts means nothing if you can’t stick to the process the whole way through. In my experience, the best way to do this is to plan.

Plan each month, or phase, with necessary tasks, due dates and goals. Having a concrete plan is a complete blessing when you are three months in and feeling discouraged. It is not easy to stay motivated and continue pushing out great content when you’re not seeing results. Having a plan that you and/or your team can follow will keep you on track and pushing forward. There is a reason many psychologists encourage people to write down goals, because it works.

Here is my recommendation for how to break down your plan:

• Audience phase (month one): Focus on defining your target audience and learning everything you can about them. This information will inform all of your future content.

• Writing phase (months two through four): This is honestly an ongoing phase, but it should begin after you know your audience and then be your main focus for the next three months at least. This is where you write, write, write — blog posts, articles, landing pages, downloadable offers, social media posts and so on.

• Tracking phase (month five): After you have pushed out all of the above content, begin more closely tracking your web analytics and lead generation and see the impact that your campaign is beginning to have.

• Improving phase (month six): Now that you know your numbers, you can see what needs improvement. On top of that, it is great to establish a system where every so many months you return to previous blog posts and add more to them, in both length and SEO.

I should note that my content team is always in the writing and improving phases.

One Thing You Need

One thing that is necessary for following the six-month slow burn is proper finances. Now, I don’t mean you need to be turning some huge profit to launch a new inbound marketing campaign, but you need to make sure that you either have a steady source of income from a different product or enough saved up to support your team.

As an example, my multifamily marketing agency launched a new product last year, and we were able to devote substantial time and effort to building an inbound marketing campaign for it in 2020. We could comfortably do this because we were still generating revenue from our agency clients.

In the end, the money you spend is typically well worth it. On average, content marketing gets three times more leads than paid search advertising, or in other words, outbound marketing.

Buckle Down For The Hardest Work 

The six-month slow burn requires not only patience but also persistence. This is the time when you will be doing the hardest work. It really helped my team to mentally prepare for this as well as prioritize it each day.

We even began holding weekly meetings so we could stay on top of all the moving parts and communicate our progress on ongoing projects. It was also helpful for my content team to pre-decide how many articles they were going to write each month. It ended up being a combination of four new blog posts and three reworkings of old blog posts per month, three to four posts per week for each social channel and weekly emails. As I said, it’s hard work.

Remember Consistency Is Key 

It’s a marathon, not a sprint. If you can lay out a plan and stick to it, you will likely be golden. It is all about continually staying in front of your audience and constantly providing them with value.

For my new product launch, it took about a full year of growing our social channels and pushing out content for us to start driving new leads. We were able to increase our Instagram following by 207% and grow our email subscribers by 89%. Even though it took us six months longer than the average, I am not ashamed in any way to share this. We were consistent and did not give up, and now we are reaping the rewards.

While taking notes by hand is slower and more cumbersome than typing, the act of writing out the information fosters comprehension and retention. Reframing the information in your own words helps you retain the information longer, meaning you’ll have better recall and will perform better on tests.

2. Have effective note-taking skills.

The better your notes are, the faster you’ll learn. Knowing how to take thorough and accurate notes will help you remember concepts, gain a deeper understanding of the topic and develop meaningful learning skills. So, before you learn a new topic, make sure you learn different strategies for note taking, such as the Cornell Method, which helps you organize class notes into easily digestible summaries.

Whatever method you use, some basic tips for note taking include:

  • Listen and take notes in your own words.
  • Leave spaces and lines between main ideas so you can revisit them later and add information.
  • Develop a consistent system of abbreviations and symbols to save time.
  • Write in phrases, not complete sentences.
  • Learn to pull out important information and ignore trivial information.

3. Distributed practice.

This method involves distributing multiple practices (or study sessions) on a topic over a period of time. Using short, spaced-out study sessions will encourage meaningful learning, as opposed to long “cram sessions,” which promote rote learning. The first step is to take thorough notes while the topic is being discussed. Afterward, take a few minutes to look over your notes, making any additions or changes to add detail and ensure accuracy.

Do this quickly, once or twice following each class or period of instruction. Over time, you can begin to spread the sessions out, starting with once per day and eventually moving to three times a week. Spacing out practice over a longer period of time is highly effective, because it’s easier to do small study sessions and you’ll stay motivated to keep learning.

4. Study, sleep, more study.

You have a big project or a major presentation tomorrow and you’re not prepared. If you’re like many of us, you stay up too late trying to cram beforehand. Surely your hard work will be rewarded, even if you’re exhausted the next day… right? However, that’s not the most efficient way for our brains to process information.

Research shows a strong connection between sleep and learning. It seems that getting some shut-eye is an important element in bolstering how our brains remember something. Deep sleep (non-rapid-eye-movement sleep) can strengthen memories if the sleep occurs within 12 hours of learning the new information. And students who both study and get plenty of sleep not only perform better academically; they’re also happier.

5. Modify your practice.

If you’re learning a skill, don’t do the same thing over and over. Making slight changes during repeated practice sessions will help you master a skill faster than doing it the same way every time. In one study of people who learned a computer-based motor skill, those who learned a skill and then had a modified practice session where they practiced the skill in a slightly different way performed better than those who repeated the original task over and over.

This only works if the modifications are small — making big changes in how the skill is performed won’t help. So, for instance, if you’re practicing a new golf swing or perfecting your tennis game, try adjusting the size or weight of your club or racket.

6. Try a mnemonic device.

One of the best ways to memorize a large amount of information quickly is to use a mnemonic device: a pattern of letters, sounds or other associations that assist in learning something. One of the most popular mnemonic devices is one we learned in kindergarten — the alphabet song. This song helps children remember their “ABCs,” and it remains deeply ingrained in our memory as adults. Another is “i before e except after c” to help us remember a grammar rule.

Mnemonics help you simplify, summarize and compress information to make it easier to learn. It can be really handy for students in medical school or law school, or people studying a new language. So, if you need to memorize and store large amounts of new information, try a mnemonic and you’ll find you remember the information long past your test.

7. Use brain breaks to restore focus.

Information overload is a real thing. In order to learn something new, our brains must send signals to our sensory receptors to save the new information, but stress and overload will prevent your brain from effectively processing and storing information.

When we are confused, anxious or feeling overwhelmed, our brains effectively shut down. You can see this happen when students listening to long, detailed lectures “zone out” and stop paying attention to what’s being said.

They simply aren’t able to effectively conduct that information into their memory banks, so learning shuts down. The best way to combat this is by taking a “brain break,” or simply shifting your activity to focus on something new. Even a five-minute break can relieve brain fatigue and help you refocus.

8. Stay hydrated.

We know we should drink water because it’s good for us — it’s good for our skin and our immune system, and it keeps our body functioning optimally. But staying hydrated is also key to our cognitive abilities. Drinking water can actually make us smarter. According to one study, students who took water with them to an examination room performed better than those who didn’t.

Dehydration, on the other hand, can seriously affect our mental function. When you fail to drink water, your brain has to work harder than usual.

9. Learn information in multiple ways.

When you use multiple ways to learn something, you’ll use more regions of the brain to store information about that subject. This makes that information more interconnected and embedded in your brain. It basically creates a redundancy of knowledge within your mind, helping you truly learn the information and not just memorize it.

You can do this by using different media to stimulate different parts of the brain, such as reading notes, reading the textbook, watching a video and listening to a podcast or audio file on the topic. The more resources you use, the faster you’ll learn.

10. Connect what you learn with something you know.

The more you can relate new concepts to ideas that you already understand, the faster the you’ll learn the new information. According to the book Make It Stick, many common study habits are counterproductive. They may create an illusion of mastery, but the information quickly fades from our minds.

Memory plays a central role in our ability to carry out complex cognitive tasks, such as applying knowledge to problems we haven’t encountered before and drawing inferences from facts already known. By finding ways to fit new information in with preexisting knowledge, you’ll find additional layers of meaning in the new material. This will help you fundamentally understand it better, and you’ll be able to recall it more accurately.

Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, uses this method. He said he views knowledge as a “semantic tree.” When learning new things, his advice is to “make sure you understand the principles, i.e., the trunk and big branches, before you get into the leaves/details or there is nothing for them to hang on to.” When you connect the new to the old, you give yourself mental “hooks” on which to hang the new knowledge.

Simply reading and re-reading texts or notes is not actively engaging in the material. It is simply re-reading your notes. Only ‘doing’ the readings for class is not studying. It is simply doing the reading for class. Re-reading leads to quick forgetting.

Think of reading as an important part of pre-studying, but learning information requires actively engaging in the material (Edwards, 2014). Active engagement is the process of constructing meaning from text that involves making connections to lectures, forming examples, and regulating your own learning (Davis, 2007).

Active studying does not mean highlighting or underlining text, re-reading, or rote memorization. Though these activities may help to keep you engaged in the task, they are not considered active studying techniques and are weakly related to improved learning (Mackenzie, 1994).

Ideas for active studying include:

  • Create a study guide by topic. Formulate questions and problems and write complete answers. Create your own quiz.
  • Become a teacher. Say the information aloud in your own words as if you are the instructor and teaching the concepts to a class.
  • Derive examples that relate to your own experiences.
  • Create concept maps or diagrams that explain the material.
  • Develop symbols that represent concepts.
  • For non-technical classes (e.g., English, History, Psychology), figure out the big ideas so you can explain, contrast, and re-evaluate them.
  • For technical classes, work the problems and explain the steps and why they work.
  • Study in terms of question, evidence, and conclusion: What is the question posed by the instructor/author? What is the evidence that they present? What is the conclusion?

Organization and planning will help you to actively study for your courses. When studying for a test, organize your materials first and then begin your active reviewing by topic (Newport, 2007). Often professors provide subtopics on the syllabi. Use them as a guide to help organize your materials. For example, gather all of the materials for one topic (e.g., PowerPoint notes, text book notes, articles, homework, etc.) and put them together in a pile. Label each pile with the topic and study by topics.

The Study Cycle, developed by Frank Christ, breaks down the different parts of studying: previewing, attending class, reviewing, studying, and checking your understanding. One of the most impactful learning strategies is “distributed practice”—spacing out your studying over several short periods of time over several days and weeks (Newport, 2007).

The most effective practice is to work a short time on each class every day.Not all studying is equal. You will accomplish more if you study intensively. Intensive study sessions are short and will allow you to get work done with minimal wasted effort. Shorter, intensive study times are more effective than drawn out studying.

Know where you study best. The silence of a library may not be the best place for you. It’s important to consider what noise environment works best for you. You might find that you concentrate better with some background noise.Working and re-working problems is important for technical courses (e.g., math, economics). Be able to explain the steps of the problems and why they work.
